April is World Autism Month, and the Optimum Pediatrics family is celebrating all our wonderful patients who live with autism. According to the CDC, 1 in 36 children have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and autism is nearly 4 times more common in boys than girls. Throughout the month of April, our team at OPS is encouraging everyone we know to show their support for World Autism Month. Keep reading to learn more about how you can celebrate this awareness month, too.
Why We Believe Autism is a Superpower
Although autism is classified as a disability, we believe that it is actually a superpower! Our nurses admire the extraordinary qualities that our autistic patients have, and we proudly support our patients in helping them leverage their unique abilities. Altogether Autism posted about some ways in which autism is a superpower, and we couldn’t agree more. Here are a few exceptional qualities that our patients show:
Learning to read at a very young age.
Having an incredible memory and ability to memorize information quickly.
Being detail orientated.
Showing punctuality when it comes to schedules and routines.
Having a strong sense of direction.
Staying concentrated for long periods of time.
Presenting unique and effective problem-solving strategies.
How You Can Raise Awareness for World Autism Month
There are many ways that you can show your support for the autism community this April. Here are some of our team’s favorite ways to honor World Autism Month:
Wear blue on April 2 for World Autism Awareness Day.
Support businesses that hire employees with autism.
Donate to organizations like Autism Speaks or American Autism Association
This April, we encourage all of you to #ActFearlessly as we work together to raise awareness and show support for the autism community. Our pediatric nursing team is touched by this community every day, and we are very excited to celebrate this medical awareness month.
