March is Red Cross Month: Let’s Raise Awareness Together!

Illustration of 4 different blood types, representing a blog post on Red Cross Month and the importance of donating blood.

This March, we are celebrating Red Cross Month in honor of the amazing work that the American Red Cross does for all our pediatric patients. Though the Red Cross is known for many of their humanitarian efforts, they are commonly known for their blood drives and other blood donation initiatives. As a pediatric home care team, we witness first-hand the impact that organizations like the Red Cross have on our patients.

Throughout the month, we hope you will help us raise awareness for the great work that the Red Cross does. Keep reading to learn more about why blood donations are important and how you can help support the Red Cross this March.

Why Giving Blood is Important

At Optimum Pediatrics, we serve many medically fragile children who rely on generous blood donors to help them stay healthy and strong. There are several medical conditions or scenarios in which a person would need the help of a blood donor. Some examples of individuals who benefit from blood donors are:

  • Cancer patients

  • Burn victims

  • Sickle cell patients

  • Trauma patients

  • Kidney and liver disease patients

Our nurses work with many children who suffer from the above conditions, and we can testify that blood transfusions have saved the lives of our patients. Though we only serve medically fragile children, we understand that people of all ages around the world rely on the help of blood donors. According to the Red Cross, someone in the U.S. is in need of receiving blood every two seconds.

How You Can Raise Awareness for Red Cross Month

In January, the Red Cross declared that they were experiencing an emergency blood shortage, so it is even more important to consider donating blood or supporting the Red Cross at this time. Though blood donations are increasingly needed, supporters can also contribute to the cause through financial support, volunteer work, or even by participating in Red Cross’ Giving Day on March 27, 2024. Above all else, we encourage you to spread the word about the need for blood donations during Red Cross Month.

Thank you to all the blood donors and Red Cross supporters who have helped to save lives around the world. Happy Red Cross Month, everyone!
