What to Expect from In-Home Pediatric Tracheotomy Care

A nurse holds up a paper heart.

When a child undergoes a tracheostomy, it can leave families with a lot of questions and “what ifs” about the future. A tracheotomy is a surgical procedure in which a tube is inserted into the windpipe (trachea) through a small opening in the neck to aid breathing, and after this procedure, children and their parents have to adjust to new care routines and habits.

At Optimum Pediatric Services, we know that caring for medically fragile children with a tracheostomy (trach) requires the proper knowledge and skills to ensure their safety and well-being. That’s why we specialize in pediatric trach care and help families transition from the hospital to in-home care with ease.

The Role of In-Home Nurses in Pediatric Trach Care

There are some key services that pediatric home care nurses should provide when working with children who have tracheostomies. In particular, here are some standard procedures that our Optimum Pediatrics nurses follow with our patients:

Trach Tube Cleaning & Changes: Our trained team of nurses provides thorough trach cleaning and periodic tube changes to prevent infections, avoid blockages, and ensure proper airflow.

Feeding Support: Some medically fragile children may require tube feeding or have difficulty swallowing. Our nurses ensure that children are positioned properly while eating and drinking to reduce the risk of choking.

Respiratory Monitoring: Our nurses regularly monitor children’s respiratory status, including oxygen levels and breathing patterns, and they report any important changes to the child’s primary healthcare provider.

Emergency Preparedness: We provide parents and caregivers with ongoing training for trach care in the event of an emergency.
